Year Three
As we enter the
Third Year
of research, we are seeking Additional
Partners to work with us on integration across
systems and databases produced the first two years and deployment of the
research ideas into prototype products. The time has come to move from
Research to Reality in the Home of the 21st Century Lab.
The focus of the third year
of the H21C research will be twofold:
1.Implement seamless integration between the location aware identification
and remote sensor networks implemented by the ECE research team and the
remote management database and applications being developed by the CS
research team.
2.Deploy prototypes of working products in the lab
One of the challenges of a smart home is creating an infrastructure that
is aware of its occupants, their location, and the context of their
application. A context-aware computing environment consists of distributed
sensor-based systems that sense, gather, and proactively make use of such
information as identity, location, and proximity to support people in
everyday tasks
Sensor based context awareness devices can be used to enhance human
safety, convenience and efficiency. Developments in sensor technologies
have increased the diversity of inputs that can be processed to determine
context, thus enabling a large class of context aware applications that
can be developed by integrating sensors and the computing nodes.
A truly pervasive computing environment provides mobility to the user. As
a result the smart home should be able to track the location of the user
and follow the context. Thus, a mobile user should not have to move an
application between devices as the user moves between them. For example, a
user might receive audio content, such as readout of an email, while also
monitoring a child via a video-monitor. If the user moves from her desktop
to the kitchen, which happens to have a speaker and a web-tablet, then the
entire application should also move to these new devices.
Providing such a context
and location aware multimedia environment involves:
1. Design and deployment of a location-aware identification and sensor
network,
2. Development of a context-following framework which will allow seamless
migration of the application, and
3. Development of the infrastructure to manage the integration of
different data streams.

Task 2: Framework for Context-Following in the SmartHome
Task 3: Deployment of Location-Aware Identification and Sensor Network:
